NFL WEEK 2 BAD BEATS / LUCKY WINS The Jacksonville Jaguars seem to have found the perfect formula. Don't waste energy gaining yards (they've averaged right around 200 YPG and 11 FDs per game) or points (10 PPG thru two weeks) but make sure to make ONE key play in the game's final seconds. Byron Leftwich threw a fourth-down TD pass in Week 1 on that game's final play at Buffalo to give Jacksonville the win and cover. The Jaguars won last Sunday when Denver's Quentin Griffin fumbled on third-down at the Jags' 23-yard line with about 30 seconds remaining! That fumble secured a Jacksonville win but it really didn't effect the pointspread as a Denver field goal would have given the Broncos a 9-7 win as a three-point favorite! There were however many Week 2 games in which the pointspread was decided by a few key plays. Here's a look.... The Colts beat the Titans 31-17 last Sunday and if you just saw the final score you would not have the whole story. The Titans missed a number of chances in the first half to extend their lead but found themselves in a 17-17 tie entering the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth-and-two at the Colts' 27-yard line, McNair threw a pass that for a second looked as if it was a TD but just as Mason was about to tuck it away at the goal line, Colt DB Nick Harper stripped the ball cleanly, for an interception.... Instead of a 24-17 Tennessee lead, the Colts drove 80 yards to go up by seven. On their very next possession, the Titans tried a fake punt on fourth down near mid-field and a minute or so later found themselves on the short end of a 14-point game, when James scored on a 30-yard run.... Seattle's 10-6 win at Tampa Bay as a three-point favorite was a real 'puker' if you had the Bucs! Seattle took a 10-0 lead scoring its only TD of the game after a 41-yard interception gave them great field position. The Settle offense did little all game, ending with a total of just nine FDs and 182 yards.... The Bucs weren't exactly the Coryell-led Chargers of the 80s but TWICE they got inside the Seattle 10-yard line only to settle for two FGs. Late in the second quarter, Chris Simms fumbled on a third-and-goal from the one-yard line while in the fourth quarter, the Bucs failed to reach the end zone after having a first-and-goal at the Seattle six!... The Bucs' last-ditch drive was FULL of agony for both Seattle and Tampa Bay bettors as two roughing the passer penalties against the Seahawks kept Tampa Bay drives alive, the second one coming after a Simms interception. Even when Simms finally threw an interception where there WASN'T a penalty called, the replay-booth reviewed the play to see if Simms knee was down prior to the pass. I don't know about you but it sure looked to me as if it WAS! Naturally, the replay official ruled it inconclusive!... What's NOT inconclusive is this. The whole replay system STINKS!... The Cleveland-Dallas game came down to the final seconds for all pointspread players! Dallas opened as 3 1/2-point favorite but the game got as high as Dallas minus-six at some places. The Cowboys scored just two TDs in the game despite reaching at least the Cleveland 43-yard line in 10 of their 11 possessions. The Browns settled for four field goals as QB Jeff Garcia was just BRUTAL! Garcia completed 8-of-27 passes for 71 yards with no TDs and three interceptions giving him a QB rating for the game of 0.0! Now you don't have to understand the NFL's complicated QB rating system to figure out that a ZERO rating is PRETTY BAD!... Beginning late in the third quarter, here's what happened. Leading 17-9, Dallas QB Vinny Testaverde threw an interception. The Browns drove to the Dallas five-yard line but settled for a field goal (Dallas 17-12). The Vinny threw another interception but Garcia threw one right back! In the spirit of "anything you can do I can do WORSE", Vinny threw his third straight interception only to see Garcia throw his third of the game! For those of you NOT COUNTING, that was FIVE interceptions in six possessions!... The game ended with Cleveland getting called for holding in the end zone (an automatic safety!) with EIGHT seconds remaining in the game, giving Dallas a seven-point, rather than a five-point win!... The Raiders were 3 1/2-point underdogs in Week 1 and lost 24-21 so I guess they figured to even things out in Week 2, they should win by just three since they were 3 1/2-point favorites this time around! In a game that will be best remembered as the game in which Jerry Rice's 274-game consecutive catch streak ended, others may remember this. It was an ugly game as neither team did much offensively but with the Raiders leading 10-3 with about three minutes to go, they faced a crucial third down at the Buffalo 15. Convert the first down and Oakland may be able to run out the clock or even put the game away with a TD. Don't make it and settle for a field goal and a 13-3 lead, leaving the 'backdoor' wide open for a late Buffalo TD and cover.... The Raiders failed to convert and did kick the field goal. Trailing by 10 points, Buffalo faced a fourth-and 18 at its own 30-yard line when the Raiders somehow allowed rookie Lee Evans to get behind all their DBs! The 65-yard completion set up a TD pass just two plays later! Final score: Oakland 13 Buffalo 10. Good for you? Not so good for me!... Everyone watches MNF, so I won't waste too much space recapping the events that played out in the Minnesota-Philadelphia game. Needles to say, two Minnesota failures at the Philadelphia goal-line in the first half, an 11-yard TD run by Culpepper that was called back in third quarter, a STUPID offensive pass interference mistake by Moss (leading to a missed FG!), a questionable TD catch by Terrell Owens that was NOT challenged by Mike Tice and Minnesota allowing two long Philadelphia KO returns in the second half, all contributed to the Vikings 27-16 loss as three-point dogs on Monday. Philly bettors had it ALL THE WAY!... |
